In taking care of the skin, Knowing your skin type is a big help to keeping it healthy. The appearance and texture of your skin is its way of communicating with you. Our skin is different from one another, and so are our skin products. Moisturizers, Cleansers, and other products are formulated to give what your skin essentially needs based on its type. So before you start buying, Let's be familiar with what your skin type is!

Types of skin

  • Normal skin: You usually have nothing to worry about when you have this type of skin. this means that the skin has good blood circulation and is well balanced in producing sebum, resulting in not too dry or not too oily skin. If you’re wondering what sebum is, it is the oil that is produced by the gland beneath our skin called the sebaceous glands.

This type of skin appears to be soft textured due to having refined pores. A little bit of cleansing and moisturizing can help your skin stay as it is. Using sunscreen won't hurt as well. It could actually prevent anyone from developing any skin diseases in the future.

  • Dry skin: Dry skin types produce fewer sebum than normal skin types, causing your skin to be less moisturized. If you notice that your skin is tight and tends to have peeling on its own, Your skin type lies closer to the drier type. Other symptoms may consist of itching, redness, and the appearance of cracks in the skin. These skin types are easy to get irritated. They are possibly caused by stress or the lack of water your body is receiving. The temperature of your environment can also contribute to your skin condition.

To help your skin, a proper way of showering is a big help. The temperature of the water shouldn’t be too hot and taking baths longer than 25 minutes should be avoided. Scrubbing and wiping can be too harsh for your skin and might cause further irritation. When stepping out of the shower pat your skin with a soft towel gently instead. To keep your skin from being dehydrated, drinking lots of water is the easiest answer but using products with moisturizer after a shower is one way too.

  • Oily skin: Consistent production of sebum can make your skin look shiny but because of its excessiveness, it clogs the pores that may lead to inflammation of the skin hence why people are often confused between oily skin and acne-prone skin. Oily skin could be potentially caused by stress, cosmetic uses, genetics, and intake of medications that affect or hormonal imbalances such as oral contraceptives.

To reduce oil production on your skin, washing your face regularly could rid some of the oil and as well as other pollutants. Constant use of toner may help with keeping your pores from clogging. You can also try facial masks and blotting papers and let them absorb away the excess. The fun fact is that usually, people that have an oily type of skin develop aging lines less fast than other types of skin.

  • Combination type: often confused with normal skin. A combination skin type is where the T-zones appear to be shiny while the cheek part is either dry or normal. Meaning that only partial parts of your face are high in sebum production and are mainly caused by genetic inheritance. The use of skincare products with moisturizer and constant use of toners can make a big effect on your skin.

  • Acne-prone: As we mentioned before, some often confused oily skin types with acne-prone skin, but acne can come from either dry skin and oily skin type since acne can also come from hormonal changes, stress, food that we eat, medications, genetics, and a lot more. Products containing salicylic acid and continuously cleansing, exfoliating, and as well as moisturizing can help with minimizing your acne. Take note that it is important to see a doctor once over-the-counter skincare products aren’t being responsive.

Tip: Blotting papers

If you’re still confused with what your skin type is, a blotting paper technique would do the trick. The use of blotting paper can help you figure out how much sebum your sebaceous glands are producing. If the blotting paper has none to a little amount of oil absorbed, it is most likely that you are a dry skin type. While having the right amount in parts of your face can tell you that you have a normal skin type or combination type, depending on the regions where you get most of the oil from. If the blotting paper absorbed a big amount of oil that makes your blotting paper looked drench, then it appears that you have an oily type of skin.
